Lens Glossary

In this glossary, we explain the abbreviations used in lens designations and what they stand for in addition to the focal length and maximum aperture.


Star
A Star lens series produced through
the use of the latest optical technologies. It delivers the ultimate in digital images, and assures optimum image quality, operability and durability.
LimitedA lens series delivering a truthful sense of depth and excellent imaging power that can’t be described by mere numerical values. Its machined aluminum-alloy body adds a sense of exclusivity.
D FAA lens series designed for 35mm full-frame digital SLR cameras, with compatibility with APS-C-format models.
DAA compact, lightweight lens series designed for APS-C-format digital SLR cameras. The series is optimized for digital imaging, and provides a wide selection of models.
DA LA lightweight version of the DA series with a plastic mount, available only as
a part of camera kits and not sold independently.
FAA lens series designed for 35mm film-format SLR cameras. This long-selling series has been highly acclaimed by professionals because of its exceptional color reproduction.
FA JA compact, lightweight lens series developed by removing an aperture ring from the FA-series models.

Function

AWA lens featuring a dustproof, weather-resistant structure
(AW stands for All Weather).
WRA lens featuring a weather-resistant structure (WR stands for Weather Resistant).
SDMA lens featuring an AF mechanism driven by SDM (Supersonic Direct-drive Motor).
DCA lens featuring an AF mechanism driven by DC (Direct Current) motor.
PLMA lens featuring an AF mechanism directly linked to a lead screw and driven by PLM (Pulse Motor).
IFA lens featuring the IF (Inner Focus) system.
ALA lens featuring aspherical lens elements for effective compensation of spherical aberration.
EDA lens featuring ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements for effective compensation of chromatic aberration.
REA lens featuring a retractable mechanism.
SRStanding for In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS).
smcSuper Multi Coating - This is was the first multi coating which was used for lenses, Pentax set as standard - All glass elements of the lens are equipped with this.
HDHigh Definition - This is the new coating process, which is used with Pentax lenses, Improving the transmission - All glass-elements of the lens are equipped with this.
SPSuper Protect Coating - Special coating, protecting the front lens against water, dust and finger marks
MacroA lens providing magnification in macro photography.
Lens Hood

PH -  Plastic Hood
RH - Rubber Hood
