Compact, slim design

PENTAX has devoted a lot of time to reduce the size and weight of their camera bodies. This is based on the belief that portability is an important factor in the camera’s overall performance. The new PENTAX KP features an array of advanced functions in a compact, slim body to ensure great photographic results whether shooting outdoors or in.

Shooting assist functions

SR II and interchangeable grips
The PENTAX KP features the SR II (Shake Reduction II*) where the five-axis mechanism allows effective compensation for camera shake caused by pitch and yaw, horizontal and vertical shift, and roll by as much as five shutter steps.
** It also lets you exchange the grip to accommodate a particular lens or suit your preference of holding comfort or shooting style.
* The SR II can be activated only in viewfinder shooting.
** Measured in conformity to CIPA standards, using the smc PENTAX-DA 18-135mmF3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF]DC WR lens at a focal length of 135mm.

Super high sensitivity, high resolution imaging

The PENTAX KP couples a new generation CMOS image sensor with the PRIME IV imaging engine and an accelerator unit. Together these expand the upper limit of the sensitivity range without generating unwanted noise. With a top sensitivity of ISO 819200, it assures super high sensitivity photography to deliver high resolution, rich gradation images with faithful reproduction of the subject’s texture and a sense of depth, even at higher ISO settings. It also produces high quality images across the entire sensitivity range.

Exceptional imaging power and super high sensitivity ISO 819200 to deliver premium quality images

ISO 819200
The highest sensitivity in PENTAX APS-C DSLR history

The PENTAX KP couples a new generation CMOS image sensor with the PRIME IV imaging engine and an accelerator unit to greatly expand the upper limit of its sensitivity range without generating unwanted noise. With a top sensitivity of ISO 819200 (standard output sensitivity), it ensures super high sensitivity photography to deliver high resolution, rich gradation images. This allows for remarkable reproduction of the subject’s texture and a true-to-life sense of depth, even at higher sensitivities. It also produces high quality images across its entire sensitivity range.

Approximately 24.32 effective megapixels and optical AA filterless design

The PENTAX KP incorporates a new-generation, APS-C CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.32 effective megapixels to produce high resolution images. It has been engineered to remove the optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter to optimise the image sensor’s outstanding imaging power. The result is sharp, fine detailed images with an accurate sense of depth. By processing image data at a high read-out speed of 14bit, it produces beautiful, rich gradation images.

Pixel Shift Resolution

Driven by the camera’s built in Shake-Reduction, this innovative system* captures four images of the same scene by shifting the image sensor by a single pixel for each image, which it then combines into a single composite image. Because it obtains full colour information in each pixel, it delivers super high resolution images which are far more accurate than those captured during the normal shooting process. It assures true-to-life colour reproduction without false colours, while effectively reducing unwanted noise. When the Motion Correction function** is activated, it automatically detects the subject’s movement during exposure, and then works to minimise negative effects during the composition process.

* When using this system, the user is advised to stabilise the camera firmly on a tripod, and use either the self-timer setting of the drive mode or a mirror lock-up function.
* This system may not produce the desired effect when the subject is in motion, or the camera is shaken during exposure.
** The Motion Correction function may not correct certain types of subject movement. It does not guarantee that the movement will be properly corrected for all subjects. The user may turn this function off as necessary.

SR II built in, five-axis shake reduction mechanism

Effective camera shake compensation of up to five shutter steps

The PENTAX KP comes equipped with the innovative sensor shift Shake Reduction II, which ensures optimum performance with any lens. In addition to common camera shake caused by pitch and yaw, this five-axis mechanism also compensates for camera shake caused by horizontal and vertical shift (often generated in macro photography). Any camera shake caused by roll, which is difficult to handle by in-lens shake reduction systems is also compensated for. Thanks to a wide compensation range of five shutter steps,* it benefits a number of handheld applications, such as when using a telephoto lens or shooting in poorly lit locations, to capture sharp, blur-free images.

* Measured in conformity to CIPA standards, using the smc PENTAX-DA 18-135mmF3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF]DC WR lens at a focal length of 135mm.

Compatible with panning shots

When taking a panning shot, the PENTAX KP detects the direction of the panning action. It then controls the SR II mechanism to compensate for unintentional camera movement. It automatically captures beautiful, high resolution images both in normal shooting and panning photography, without the need to change settings.

27-point AF system (with 25 cross-type sensors)
Highly accurate subject detection

Featuring 27 sensor points across the image field, the PENTAX KP’s sophisticated AF system not only captures the subject in sharp focus, but also automatically refocuses on a moving subject as it moves away from the initial point; it does this with the help of neighbouring points. Of the 27 points, 25 cross-type sensors are positioned in the middle to ensure high precision autofocus operation for all types of subjects.

F2.8 luminance flux linear AF sensors

Three centre sensors — one in the middle and two others positioned above and below it — are designed to detect the luminance flux of an F2.8 lens for high precision autofocusing. When using a very fast lens with a maximum aperture of larger than F2.8, these sensors ensure improved focusing accuracy compared to sensors designed for a F5.6 luminance flux.

Scene Analyze AUTO
Advanced scene analysis mode developed from deep learning technology

Supported by the PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System, this mode automatically optimizes exposure settings, then selects the most appropriate finishing touch for each subject. When using the optical viewfinder, the system is assisted by an algorithm developed through the use of deep learning artificial intelligence technology to perform more complete scene assessment. Simply by setting the camera’s mode dial to AUTO (Scene Analyze AUTO), you are assured of the best finishing touch for each image.

Compact, slim design
Perfect to bring with you wherever you go

PENTAX has devoted much of its effort to the downsizing of the camera body. By optimizing the design of internal components and mechanisms, it has succeeded in packaging exceptional imaging power, supported by original technologies and a host of advanced functions, in the PENTAX KP’s compact, slim body. It assures casual, carefree shooting not only during daily outings, but also on trips and outdoor activities.

Advanced Automatic Exposure system
Including PENTAX Hyper Control

In addition to the conventional Av (Aperture-priority) and Tv (Shutter-priority) modes, the PENTAX KP provides PENTAX original auto-exposure modes that let you express the subject’s motion and the depth of field in the way you want. By setting the Smart Function to the ISO mode, you can flexibly control three primary exposure parameters — aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity – using the front and rear e-dials and the setting dial.

P (Hyper Program mode)
This mode lets you set the desired aperture and/or shutter speed using the e-dials, while retaining the proper exposure level. This eliminates the need for switching the mode dial to the Tv or Av position to achieve the desired visual effect, such as the rendering of subject motion or the depth of field.

M (Hyper Manual mode)
After setting the proper exposure level with a push of the green button, you can adjust the exposure to the desired level using the e-dials. This is a much faster and easier way to obtain the desired exposure than manually setting each exposure parameter while checking the exposure bar scale. By activating the AE-lock function, you can even shift aperture and/or shutter-speed settings while retaining the initial exposure level.

* Using AE-lock function together, you can even shift aperture and/or shutter-speed settings while retaining the exposure level of that time.

Sv (Sensitivity-priority mode)
The camera automatically selects a combination of aperture and shutter speed settings to obtain the proper exposure level, in relation to the user-selected ISO sensitivity.

TAv (Shutter-speed/Aperture-priority mode)
The camera automatically selects the ISO sensitivity to obtain the proper exposure level, in relation to the user-selected aperture and shutter speed settings.

B (Bulb mode)
This mode allows you to set any desired exposure duration. It also provides a Bulb Timer function to set the desired exposure time from 10 seconds to 20 minutes. This adds versatility and flexibility to bulb shooting.

Depth-of-field Bracketing
and Motion Bracketing

Quick capture of three images
with varied depth of field or
subject motion

These new functions allow you to capture three different images of the same scene or subject with a single shutter release, without affecting the overall exposure level. Since they don’t require time-consuming manual operation to shift exposure settings, you can concentrate on a shutter chance and image composition.

[Depth-of-field Bracketing]
This function continuously captures three images with different depths of field by automatically raising or lowering the aperture setting in steps.

Electronically controlled shutter unit with quiet, high speed operation and top speed of 1/24000 second
Ideal for shooting in quiet locations, and for creating beautiful bokeh effects in sunlit scenes

The PENTAX KP provides a choice of mechanical and electronic shutter modes. In the electronic shutter mode,* the shutter unit produces very little noise and vibration during shutter-curtain operation, making it ideal for shooting in locations where silence is required. This mode also provides a top shutter speed of 1/24000 second, making it handy when you want to use an open aperture in bright, sunny locations. In Live View or mirror lock-up shooting, it provides even quieter, lower-vibration operation.

* The electronic shutter mode can be used with continuous shooting, bracketing, mirror lock-up, and multiple exposure functions. When the PENTAX Pixel Shift Resolution System is engaged, the camera’s shutter mode is locked to electronic shutter.
* In the electronic shutter mode, the SR II mechanism and the AA-filter simulator are inoperable.
* When shooting a fast-moving subject in the electronic shutter mode, the subject may appear to be distorted.

High-speed continuous shooting at approximately seven images per second
Reliable capture of the precise moment when shooting fast-moving subjects

The PENTAX KP provides high-speed continuous shooting at a top speed of approximately seven images per second. It also lets you choose a speed of approximately 0.8 or three images per second, allowing you to select the speed that best suits the movement of your subject.
